Candace Mae Hedges, affectionately known as Candy or Nana, a resident of Belington, departed this life Saturday afternoon, Jan. 11, 2025, in the Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown, West Virginia. Death was following a period of declining health.
Candy was a cherished figure in her community of Belington, West Virginia, and beloved by all who knew her.
She was born March 18, 1952, at Milford, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Robert Earl and Thelma Christina “Tootsie” Carron Trevett.
Candy was the loving wife of Jonathan Hedges, her soulmate and the love of her life, who survives at their home in Belington, West Virginia. They married on Sept. 25, 1976,
Left to cherish her memory are two children, Christina Grissom and husband, Bill, of Griswold, Connecticut, and Robert Hedges of Belington; a brother, William Trevett and wife, Lilly of Milford, Massachusetts; two grandchildren, Jonathan “Jay” Hedges and Samantha Hedges; and a great-granddaughter, Scarlet Rose Hedges-Warfield.
She is also survived by a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss her deeply.
Candy was a graduate from the Holliston High School in Holliston, Massachusetts, and attended the University of New Hampshire, where she pursued further in studies in nutrition. She wore many hats throughout her career, notably as a substitute teacher at Lebanon Elementary School in Lebanon, Connecticut, where she was deeply appreciated for her dedication and warmth.
A woman of many interests, Candy was deeply engaged in various hobbies including crafts, cooking, gardening, and canning. Her talents in these areas brought great joy not only to her but also to those around her.
She was a faithful member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Belington, West Virginia, where she was involved in numerous community and church activities, including the Ladies Group. She also loved to accompany her husband, Jon, while he would speak at various Methodist churches in the area. If you saw one you saw the other. Candy was comforted by hearing her husband sing when they were home alone. Candy’s life was a testament to her loving nature and her unwavering commitment to her family. Her legacy will continue on in the hearts of those she touched. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by several beloved aunts and uncles.
Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home 56 N. Brandenburg Street in Belington on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Pastor Clarence Thomas and Pastor Sandy Bennett officiating.
