Carole ‘Gretchen’ Wegman Guire Cleavenger

CLEAVENGER
Carole “Gretchen” Wegman Guire Cleavenger, 91, a native of Randolph County, West Virginia, and a resident of ERCC for the past seven years, and a former resident of Volga, West Virginia, departed this life early Wednesday morning, Jan. 15, 2025, at the Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center in Elkins, West Virginia.
She was born Wednesday, Sept. 20, 1933, at Adolph, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Adolph Richard and Martha Elsie Fincham Wegman.
She was twice married. First, on June 23, 1950, to Thomas Joseph Guire, who preceded her in death June 6, 1977. Second, to Donald E. Cleavenger, who preceded her in death Aug. 16, 2012.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas Joseph Guire Jr. and wife, Ann, of Mabie, Kevin Michael Guire and wife, Donna, of Atwater, Ohio, and Stephen Francis Guire and wife, Sondra, of Buckhannon; five daughters, Deborah Marie Keefe and husband, Gerald, of Tewksbury, Massachusetts, Melanie Carole Bennett and husband, Ernest, of Beverly, West Virginia, Martha Christine Rosenau and husband, Mike, of Parsons, Mary Elizabeth Sharp of Mabie, West Virginia, and Barbara Ellen Lakatos and husband, Steve, of Marshfield, Massachusetts; four stepsons, Rick Cleavenger and wife, Mary Ann, of Moatsville, Randall Cleavenger and wife, Janice, of Volga, Gary Cleavenger and wife, Bunny, of Philippi, West Virginia, and Bill Cleavenger and wife, Patty, of Century, West Virginia; two stepdaughters, Susie Ford and husband, Les, of Michigan, and Kathleen Tackish and husband, Jamie, of Fairmont, West Virginia; one sister, Sylvia Fitzwater and husband, Robert Fox, of Buckhannon; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death are one stepdaughter, Kelly Morse; eight brothers, Jim, Richard, Preston, Clayton and Kenneth Wegman, and three infants; and two sisters, Muriel French, and Evelyn George.
She attended the schools of Adolph and Belington High School. She was a homemaker and was a member of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church at Coalton and Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church at Philippi. She was a member of the Rosary Cedality, the Holy Rosary Society and had taught CCD classes to several people. She loved to read, and work in her flower and vegetable garden. She enjoyed traveling with Donald and enjoyed singing and playing the guitar.
The family will receive friends at Saint Patrick Catholic Church at Coalton, West Virginia, on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025, from 10 a.m. until 11:50 a.m.
The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at noon.
The Rev. Father James E. O’Connor and The Rev. Father Ed Tetteh will be the Presiders, and interment will follow at the Saint Vincent Cemetery at Kingsville, West Virginia.
The family suggest that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to; Saint Patrick Catholic Church of Coalton, West Virginia, Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church of Philippi, West Virginia, or St. Jude Research Hospital.
