George Calvin ‘Gus’ Frey

George Calvin “Gus” Frey, 97, a resident of Moatsville, passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025, in The Stonehaven Home in Belington.
Gus was born March 1, 1927, in Johnson City, Tennessee, a son of the late Floyd Thamer and Hazel (Marshall) Frey.
Gus was united in marriage on Dec. 10, 1949, to Betty (Freeman) Frey.
Gus attended the schools of Barbour County and was a retired carpenter. He belonged to The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 436, Bridgeport, West Virginia, of which he was a 50+ year member. Gus was a devotional leader at Soul’s Harbor Tabernacle for many years. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and he loved watching and playing baseball. He was quite a pitcher in his day. Later in life, his focus was on gardening, yardwork, and attending church. He took great pleasure in traveling to local churches and singing for the Lord.
He loved his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren wholeheartedly and cherished the time spent with family.
Gus is survived by children, Marsha Nestor and husband, Steve, of Belington, Angela Harris and husband, DJ, of Moatsville, Charles “David” Frey and wife, Nancy, of Philippi, Stephen Frey and wife, Pam, of Tacy, and Jeffrey Frey of Belington; 14 grandchildren, Tonya Ferguson, Christina Mills, Sarah Harris, Linnea Walters, Rochelle Nestor, Jessica McLean, Kaitlin Jones, Brett Frey, Shelby Frey, Kory Jones, Abbie Frey, Gracie Frey, Dean Harris and Loryn Harris; eight great-grandchildren, Stephen Ferguson, Michaela Loudin, Slaton Harris, Rustyn Harris, Acelynn Harris, Joden Harris, Carly Mills and Camryn Mills; two great-great-grandchildren, Emmie Loudin and Frankie Ferguson; sisters-in-law, Rose Frey and Noretta Frey; also many nieces and nephews.
Gus was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Hazel Frey; wife, Betty Frey.
Gus was the last surviving member of his immediate family. His siblings included Floyd Thamer “Bus” Frey, Robert “Grapey” Frey, Ralph “Chick” Frey, James “Brandy” Frey, Charles “Boomer” Frey, Harold “Enoch” Frey, Darl “Bevo” Frey, Tommy Frey, Christine “Tuke” Morris, Edith Marsh, Margaret “Babe” Marsh, Joann Frey, Lewis Semmelman and Donald Semmelman.
Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory, 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi, on Friday, Jan. 17, from 5-8 p.m. and on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 9- 11 a.m.
Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m., with Rev. Brandon Kelley and Pastor Johnnie Williams.
Interment will follow in the Clemtown Cemetery.
