Helen ‘Jean’ Cole Currence
Helen “Jean” Cole Currence, 79, a resident of Elkins, passed away Jan. 13, 2025, in the Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown.
She was born Oct. 1, 1945, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Edwin L. Cole and Alma Elizabeth Zirkle Cole.
On June 20, 1965, at Oakland, Maryland, she was married to David James “Jim” Currence, who preceded her in death April 11, 2015.
Jean is survived by her son, Dr. David Jay Currence, MD; and her daughter, Donna Joanne Canfield and husband, Lee, all of Elkins.
Also surviving is one brother, William “Billy” Watts of Sedalia, Missouri; and one sister, Pamela K. Shrader of Petersburg, West Virginia.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lee Cole.
Jean graduated with the last class of Belington High School and studied nursing at the Davis Memorial School of Nursing until the nursing program was discontinued. She then finished her Registered Nursing qualifications at the Camden Clark School of Nursing in Parkersburg, West Virginia.
In her youth, Jean was a member of 4H, worked on the family farm and had exceptional skills at shooting a firearm. She set up displays in many local stores to let customers taste test food products. She had a love for animals but especially cats and will be missed by her current fur babies.
She was a Methodist by faith.
Friends may call from noon until 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, from the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Robert Baer, Jr. officiating.
Interment will follow at the Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Country Club Road, Elkins.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Randolph County Humane Society, PO Box 785, Elkins, WV 26241 and please specify for the care of cats.
