Marc ‘Layne’ Godwin

Marc “Layne” Godwin, a 64-year-old Elkins resident, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

Born on Sept. 13, 1960, in Montgomery, Alabama, Layne was the son of the late Rev. Lowell Clark Godwin and Sharon Lynn Wilson Godwin.

On Sept. 13, 1981, he married Arvilla Varner, whom he had a loving and devoted 43-year marriage with.

Layne is survived by four sons, Kelly Godwin and his fiancee, Amanda Haddix, Justin Godwin and his wife, Brooke, Marc Godwin and Chris Godwin and his wife, Kennya, all of Elkins.

He also has three brothers, Lee Godwin of Philadelphia, Lynn Godwin and his wife, Penny, of Ripley, and Lawrence Godwin and his wife, Julie, of Starbuck, Minnesota.

Additionally, he has one sister, L’Louise Fox and husband, Mark, of Hurricane; four grandchildren, Madison Godwin, Kaylee Godwin, Grayson Godwin and Eleanor Godwin; and several nieces and nephews.

Layne was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Loren Godwin; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Godwin and Stasia Godwin.

Layne Godwin, a graduate of Elkins High School in 1979, had a fulfilling career spanning various fields. He began his professional journey with the West Virginia State Police, later transitioning to several years of dedicated service with the US Forest Service in Parsons. Additionally, he worked for Pepsi-Cola. Until his passing, Layne continued his work with the West Virginia Department of Highways as a skilled radio technician.

Beyond his professional achievements, Layne had a deep passion for working with youth at any church he attended. He actively served as a teacher in many of these churches, sharing his love of Christ with the next generation. Layne cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren, making sure to attend every game they played.

Layne’s legacy will be remembered for his infectious dad jokes and dry sense of humor, which brought joy and laughter wherever he went. His presence alone had a magical ability to brighten up the lives of everyone around him.

Funeral services for Layne will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at Rivers of Living Waters Church in Elkins.

The service will commence at 11 a.m. and conclude at 1 p.m., with Pastor Jerry Murrell officiating.

Following the service, interment will take place in the Beverly Cemetery in Beverly.
