Phoebe Hickman Johnkoski

Phoebe Hickman Johnkoski, 90, a resident of Elkins, passed away Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, in Mountain Memories Assisted Living & Retirement Center in Elkins.

She was born March 23, 1934, in Elkins a daughter of the late Garland Hickman and the late Clara Butcher Hickman.

On Dec. 29, 1955, in Elkins, she married Vincent H. “Ig” Johnkoski, who preceded her in death April 5, 2021.

Surviving is one daughter, Teresa “Terri” Phipps (husband Mark) of Elkins; three grandchildren, Samantha Phipps, John Phipps and Emily Stratton (husband Cameron); and two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Alduncin Phipps and Kimberly Stratton.

Also preceding her in death was one son, Vincent A. Johnkoski; and one sister, Peggy Hickman Harvey.

Phoebe was a graduate of Elkins High School and attended classes at Davis & Elkins College. She was a homemaker and avid quilter, known for the many baby quilts she made. She was also known for her love of Christmas, her devotion to her grandchildren, and for always cheering on the WVU Mountaineers. Phoebe was a member of the John Hart Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Elkins and the We Care Ministry of the church, a past Board Member of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center and a former volunteer of Meals on Wheels of Randolph County.

A private entombment will take place at the Cunningham Memorial Park at St. Albans, West Virginia.

A celebration of her life will follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Phoebe.
