Shelvie Jean Varner Mullenax

Shelvie Jean Varner Mullenax, 87, a resident of the Holly Meadows Community, Parsons, West Virginia, and for the past several years a resident of Cortland Acres at Thomas, West Virginia, departed this life Friday evening, Jan. 31, 2025, at Cortland Acres. She had been in declining health.
She was born Friday, July 30, 1937, at Dry Fork, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Baden Varner and Alice Day Varner. On Dec. 24, 1955, at Oakland, Maryland, she was married to Franklin Delano Mullenax Sr., who preceded her in death Nov. 11, 2005.
Surviving are one son, Franklin Delano Mullenax Jr. and wife, Diana, of Sugarlands; two daughters, Deborah Lynn Knotts of Sugarlands and Sylvia Diane Mullenax of Elkins; one brother, Fred Varner of Barbour County; six grandchildren, Travis Mullenax and wife, Katie, Lynne Sandell and wife, Shelbe, Tammy Hedrick, Sarah Rothenburgh, Briana Mullenax and Lexie Simons; nine great-grandchildren, Addyson, Macey, Lillian Sandell, Sommer McCord and husband Elijah, Sidney and Sean Simmons, and Landon Plum and Peyton and Carter Richardson; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are two brothers, Carl and Delbert Worth Varner; and two sisters, Shirley Parsons and Annabelle Pifer.
She attended the school at Dry Fork and was a graduate of Parsons High School.
She was a homemaker. She had worked at Parsons Footwear and Blackwater Falls State Park Lodge, working in the kitchen. She was a babysitter for her family, was an excellent cook and baker and loved spending time with her family. She attended the Brethren Church in Sugarlands.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons, West Virginia, on Thursday from 4 until 6 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 7, 2025, at 11 a.m. The Reverend James Snyder will officiate and interment will follow at the Bethel Cemetery at Holly Meadows, West Virginia.
