Nellie Margaret Simmons Galford, 94, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, was called home by the Lord on Monday morning, March 24, 2025, at the West Virginia Caring Hospice Center, surrounded by her family. Death was attributed to complications of a heart attack
She was born Friday, June 20, 1930, in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Robert Simmons and Maye Ryder Simmons.
On Oct. 12, 1952, at Boyer, West Virginia, she was married to Berlin Stanley Galford, who preceded her in death Dec. 12, 2011. They had been married 59 years.
Surviving are one daughter, Robin Price and husband, Michael, of Elkins; one son-in-law, Duane DeFreese, Indian Harbour Beach, Florida; two granddaughters, Kristi Ward and husband, Andrew, of Scott Depot, and Erin Price of Alexandria, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Bryce and Alyssa Ward of Scott Depot, and Ava Price of Whitmer; one sister, Betty Bowlby of Philippi; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death are one daughter, Vicki Lynn DeFreese; one grandson, Shawn Michael Price; one brother, Robert “Buddy” Simmons; and three sisters, Patricia Donaldson, Alma Willett, and Lois Munden.
Nellie began her education in a one-room school in Pocahontas County and graduated from Greenbank High School. Upon graduation, she was employed as a sales clerk at the A & P Grocery Store in Elkins. She took a hiatus from employment once she married to raise her family. When she rejoined the workforce, she worked for the American Red Cross until she was employed at Davis Trust Company Bank, until her retirement in 1993.
Nellie was involved in her home community. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher. She volunteered at Davis Memorial Hospital as one of their “Pink Ladies.” In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, crewel embroidery, making toboggans for those in need through the Methodist Church and time with her family and friends.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins, West Virginia, on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour.
Jason Brandon, Preaching Minister of the First Church of Christ, will officiate and interment will follow at the Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Airport Road, Elkins, West Virginia.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241 or to the WV Caring Hospice Center, 169 Diamond Street, Elkins, WV 26241.
