Margaret Joan Wilmoth Bennett

Margaret Joan Wilmoth Bennett, 95, lifelong resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life on July 19, 2025, at home surrounded by immediate family.

Margaret was born February 3, 1930, to the late Harvey E. and Ada Elbon Wilmoth of Elkins. On Dec. 25, 1948, she was united in marriage to Calvin Keith Bennett, who preceded her in death. The couple celebrated 72 years of marriage.

Surviving is a son, Alan Bennett (Charlotte) of Morgantown; and a daughter, Sherry Bennett Walsh (Mike) of Chattanooga, Tennessee. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jeff Basile (Erin) of Morgantown; Frank Basile of Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania; Krysta Bennett Whipple (Ben) of Tallahassee, Florida, David, Ashley and Stephanie Bennett of Morgantown, Ryan Walsh of Nashville, Tennessee, and Lauren Walsh (Ben Rankin) of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Margaret is also survived by nine great grandchildren, Linden Bennett and Gianna Bennett-Orange of Morgantown, Flynn, Calvin, Griffin and Rosemary Basile of Morgantown, Drake and Katelyn Whipple of Tallahassee, Florida, and Bodhi Walsh-Rankin of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Michael Bennett; and three brothers, Carl, Harry and Ira Wilmoth.

Margaret was a graduate of Elkins High School and a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, where she served as membership and financial secretary for 19 years. She was a den mother for that church’s Cub Scout Pack 88 and a Sunday School teacher for 25 years.

Margaret loved the outdoors, especially fishing, boating, hiking, and interacting with the countless wildlife that frequently visited their river cabin.

Her grandkids refer to her as “the deer whisperer” and she jokingly referred to herself as an avid and talented “fishing chic.”

The family wishes to thank Mountain Hospice for their compassion and assistance.

At the decedent’s request, there will be no visitation or service. Private interment will take place at Mount Vernon Cemetery near Beverly.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Margaret.
