Deana Marie Poling

POLING
Deana Marie Poling, born May 18, 1961, in Elkins, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Aug. 11, 2025, at Hospice of the Panhandle in Kearneysville, West Virginia, surrounded by love.
She was born to the late Herbert M. Poling and Wilda P. (Zirkle) Poling. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Poling and Richard Poling; and a sister, Sandra Poling.
Deana lived her life with a rare and beautiful combination of strength, kindness, humor, and generosity. She had a laugh that could fill a room, a quick wit that could brighten the hardest days, and a heart that never stopped giving. She was a wonderful woman with a giving heart–whether it was taking in “extra kids” her own children brought home or helping a friend in need, Deana was always there. She was a Superwoman in every sense.
She loved to sing, having grown up in church sharing her beautiful voice. She was an amazing cook who fed the neighborhood when her kids were teens, and she found her greatest joy in spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Quiet evenings with her favorite TV shows and a cup of coffee were her way of recharging, but she was happiest when surrounded by loved ones.
In her early 30s, Deana decided to pursue higher education. She earned an associate’s degree in social work from Potomac State College and later a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University.
She worked as a Disabilities Advocate, fighting for the rights of people with disabilities and helping make their homes more accessible so they could live independently. She also served as a federal employee with the U.S. Census Bureau.
As her health declined, Deana faced challenges with grace, even when it meant relying on others after a lifetime of being the strong, capable one. Her love, resilience, and humor remained steadfast until the very end. She was a remarkable person who was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Deana is survived by her daughter, Candelaria D. “Cande” Lopez of Romney; her twin sons, Matthew M. and Jose R. Lopez Jr. of Belington, West Virginia; her grandchildren, Oryan, Logan, Lindsey, and Kaeliana. She is also survived by her brother, Russell W. Poling of Belington; and her sister, Karen S. Phillips of Belington; her sister-in-law, Carla Poling of Mabie, West Virginia; a special friend, James H. Method of Romney; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends will be received on Monday, Aug. 18, 2025, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dale Myers officiating. Interment will be at Tearcoat Cemetery in Augusta, West Virginia. Following the burial, a meal and time of fellowship will be held at the American Legion in Romney.
Her song may have ended, but the melody will live forever in our hearts.
