Joan Gibson, 96, of Troy, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at Otterbein of Tipp City. She was born Feb. 23, 1929, to Augustus Grant and Stella Jane (Poling) Hinchman in Elkins, West Virginia.
She is preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Thomas E. Gibson, of 61 years; daughter, Bonita Taggart; son, Thomas Grant Gibson; grandson, Tyler Brown; siblings, Roy Hinchman, Oney Hinchman, Thelma Oakes, Earl Hinchman, Helen West, Robert Hinchman, Mildred Kettle and Betty Lou Perkins.
She will be missed and remembered by her loving daughters, Alicia (Russ) Kimmel of Covington, and Christie (Sam) Brown of Troy; son-in-law Ted Taggart; grandchildren, Seth Brown, Austin Brown, Chase Brown and Joseph Taggart; sisters-in-laws, Barbara Hinchman and Ann Gibson; and many nieces and nephews.
Joan graduated from Davis & Elkins College with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She was a teacher at Milton-Union High School for over 35 years where she taught business, English, and typing. Joan was an advisor of the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). She volunteered at the United Way, Upper Valley Medical Center, Schuster Performing Arts Center, a substitute teacher at Riverside in Troy, and a reading tutor at Covington Elementary. She was a member of The Church of the Brethren in Pleasant Hill. She touched many lives throughout her 96 years and will be sorely missed by those who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, at Hale-Sarver Family Funeral Home, 284 N. Miami St, West Milton. Burial will follow in Miami Memorial Park, Covington. The family will received friends from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Otterbein Hospice.
