Phyllis Ann (Linger) Cowell

COWELL
Phyllis Ann (Linger) Cowell, 81, formerly of Huttonsville, West Virginia, passed away at her home in Escondido, California, on July 17, 2025.
Phyllis was born on May 30, 1944, in Huttonsville, West Virginia, at home on her family’s farm. She grew up with her brother, Russell, and sister, Sue, surrounded by rolling hills. She often recalled afternoons spent playing with cousins, the excitement of attending 4-H Camp, attending the Forest Festival and walking to a two-room schoolhouse where desks still held ink wells.
A bright and dedicated student, Phyllis graduated as Valedictorian from Tygarts Valley High School in 1962 before attending West Virginia University. There, she pursued Home Economics and, more significantly, met Matt — the man who would stand by her side for the next 60 years.
Together, Matt and Phyllis raised their two daughters in Pennsylvania before moving west to California in 1980, finally settling in Escondido in 1989. Their home became a place of joy and gathering — alive with the sound of laughter during pool parties, family dinners, and weekends with their grandkids. In that same spirit, Phyllis tended her home garden with care, creating not just a beautiful space for her family to grow and enjoy, but a place where all felt welcomed and loved.
Phyllis’s life was a testament to her deep faith and gentle strength. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, she served her church community in countless ways — from teaching Sunday School for many years to participating in ministries that touched lives quietly but profoundly.
In later years, she found joy in Tuesday morning yoga and 50+ luncheons, where her warm smile and kind presence became a steady light to others.
Phyllis will always be remembered by her selfless devotion to her family, especially to her husband, Matt; daughters, Beth (Earl) and Karen (Ken); brother, Russell (Betty); sister, Sue (Dave); and grandchildren, Michael, Megan (Nick), Justin and Meredith. She also leaves behind countless friends whose lives were blessed by her sincere grace.
Phyllis’s legacy lives on through the family she cherished, the faith she lived, and the love she shared so deeply.
