Berlin Douglas ‘Doug’ Haller

Berlin Douglas “Doug” Haller, 71, of Philippi, West Virginia, passed away in Broaddus Hospital in Philippi on Sept. 1, 2025.

He was born in Philippi, West Virginia, to Calvin “Berl” Haller and Betty Lou (Reed) Haller on Feb. 18, 1954.

He attended Barbour County Schools and graduated from Philip Barbour High School in 1972 while he worked for Smith’s Drug Store.

A proud and lifelong coal miner, Doug worked for nearly three decades for several mining companies in North Central West Virginia. He retired from Anker Mining at Quarters Crossing in 2000.

Doug met the love of his life, Sandra “Sandy” Adele Nestor, while both were members of Barbour County 4-H and began dating in 1971. The two were married Aug. 19, 1973, at Jackson’s Mill in Weston, West Virginia, and just celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary together in 2025.

They had two children, Tracy Dawn and Chad Douglas.

Doug was a 29-year member of Philippi Lions Club in which he held various offices. He managed the club’s Ambulatory Care Program, which provided gently used medical equipment to patients in need throughout the region.

One of Doug’s passion projects was placing American Flags at Veteran’s graves at the Clemtown Cemetery. He was also instrumental in the maintenance and restoration of the historic cemetery at Taylor’s Drain. He dearly loved his wife and children, his grandchildren, his extended family and his community.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Berl and Betty; and his beloved in-laws, John and Pearl Nestor of Kasson.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy, of Philippi; daughter, Tracy, and son-in-law, Eric Minor of Morgantown; son, Chad of Philippi; granddaughter, Arden Minor of Carnegie, Pennsylvania; grandson, Benjamin Minor of Fairmont, West Virginia; brother, Ronald “Ronnie” Haller and his longtime companion, Karen Lamb; niece, Christina Haller, all of Moatsville, Phillip “Phil” Haller and longtime companion, Cecelia Lake, of Arden; special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Marsha Nestor; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Karen and Charles Anderson; his good friends and neighbors, Jim and Denise Taylor; and his beloved dog, Milly.

Doug was a member of the former Arden United Methodist Church.

Family will receive friends at the Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory, 220 N. Walnut St., Philippi, on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Friday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., from the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Mike Rex Rexroad officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mt. Morris Cemetery.
