Derek Christopher Arbogast

ARBOGAST

Derek Christopher Arbogast, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Sept. 24, 2025, at the age of 59. He was in his usual health and death was unexpected.

Born on Aug. 16, 1966, in Elkins, West Virginia, Derek was the son of the late John Adam and Karen June (Messer) Arbogast.

On March 7, 1987, Derek married the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Tallman.

They had two children together, one son, William Arbogast and wife, Carrie; and one daughter, Jessica Shaffer and husband, Adam.

Derek is also survived by one sister, Angela Anderson (Chuck); and three brothers, Brian Arbogast (Andrea), Justin Arbogast (Amy) and Zachary Arbogast.

Derek shared 38 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life. He expressed his devotion daily — through words, actions, and the steady faithfulness of a true partner. Their marriage was a bond built on love, respect, and commitment, and it remained his greatest source of pride.

Of all the roles Derek filled, none brought him more happiness than being “Pap.” He is survived by his four beloved grandchildren, Quinn Arbogast, Norah Shaffer, Hudson Arbogast and August Shaffer — each of whom brought immeasurable joy to his life.

A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Derek graduated from Elkins High School in 1984 and went on to attend Vale Technical Institute. He then began his career with Monongahela Power (First Energy), where he worked faithfully for 38 years until his retirement. Derek felt most at peace outdoors. Whether walking the woods on the family deer farm, casting a line in a quiet stream with his son, father, and brothers, or camping and boating with his wife and grandchildren, nature was where he found joy and renewal. He especially loved sharing these experiences with his grandchildren, creating memories that will live on in their hearts forever.

Derek was many things: hardworking, talented, a gifted craftsman and a loyal friend. But above all, he was a devoted family man. His wife, children and grandchildren were the center of his world. He always made time for his grandchildren, ending each visit with a warm, “See you tomorrow!” — a promise of his constant presence in their lives. He was in awe of his granddaughters’ compassion and wisdom, admired the young women they were becoming, and cherished every adventure with his grandsons. He showed up for every season of life — the celebrations, the ordinary days, and even the most difficult moments when strength was needed most. Derek was a steady foundation his family could always rely on. With a knack for fixing and building, he took pride in working with his hands, but even greater pride in using them to care for those he loved. Derek will be deeply missed, more than words can capture. His legacy lives on in the love, strength, and devotion he gave so freely. For his family, his memory will always be both a treasure to hold close and a reminder of how to live — with generosity, faithfulness and a heart that loved without limits.
