Floyd Gilbert Estridge Jr.

Floyd Gilbert Estridge Jr. passed away Oct. 20 at approximately 4 a.m.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1937, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the only child of the late Floyd Gilbert Estridge, MD, and Helen Elizabeth Estridge.

On June 1, 1957, he married Joyce Ramona Betler, who preceded him in death on April 4, 2025.

After graduating high school in Berea, Kentucky, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served honorably in the National Security Service. After eight years, he left the Air Force and joined the Department of Defense, National Security Agency, where he worked until retiring in 1993. During this time, he earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in education from the University of Maryland in addition to a Master of Arts in personnel administration from the University of Central Michigan.

Floyd is survived by his son, George Gilbert Estridge of Roanoke, Virginia; granddaughter, Lauren Taylor Wright of Bell Air, Maryland; two great-grandsons, Timothy Ethan Taylor and Aiden James Taylor, of Bell Air, Maryland; sister-in-law, Carylon Tallman of Columbia, Maryland; brother and sister-in-law, Dewey and Karen Betler of Catonsville, Maryland; brother-in-law, Frederick Pross, Beverly, West Virginia; and numerous great nephews and nieces.

Floyd was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed gardening and yard work as long as his health permitted.

The Estridge family would like to thank the staff at Mountain Memories Assisted Living and Retirement Center and West Virginia Caring for the care and support they provided.

A graveside service will be held at Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman on Friday, Oct. 24, 2025, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Ann Fretwell officiating.
