Mildred Mae Marteney
MARTENEY
Mildred Mae Marteney, 97, of Audra Park Road, Buckhannon, West Virginia, (Barbour County) passed away on Sunday Oct. 5, 2025, at Broaddus Hospital, Philippi, West Virginia. She had been in declining health for three months.
She was born Dec. 3, 1927, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Alonzo and Maude Winans.
Mildred met her future husband, Paul Marteney, at Campbell School Cake Walk social and they were married on Sept. 9, 1946. Paul preceded Mildred in death on July 9, 2006, after 60 years of marriage. Together they raised seven children.
Surviving are four daughters, Willa Stalnaker of Shinnston, Marie Mick of Winfield, Karen Shaffer of Volga and Ellen Wentz of Lost Creek; two sons, Steve Marteney and Bill Marteney and wife, Mary, both of Audra; seven grandchildren, Frank Stalnaker, Becky Stalnaker, Lisa (Mick) and husband, Michael McGhee, Angela Mick, Stephanie (Wentz) and husband, Joe Richards, Traci Shaffer and Jason Shaffer and wife, Constance Shaffer; 10 great grandchildren, Dorian Stalnaker, Aidan Linger, Corbin and Madison McGhee, Ethan Miller, Samantha Hunter, Cody Mason, Drew and Jenna Richards and Hudson Owen Shaffer.
Mrs. Marteney was preceded in death by one son, Neil Marteney; grandson, John Paul Shaffer,; son-in-law, Russell Wentz; son-in-law, Bill Mick; one sister, Delta Evix; and two brothers, Thurman and Cecil Winans.
Mrs. Marteney was a homemaker. Mildred was a great seamstress. She made many hand sewn quilts and gave away most of them to family. Once a woman asked to buy one of her quilts and she gave her $1,000 for it. She made many other hand sewn items including dolls, wall hangings, pin cushions, and pot holders.
She loved collecting dolls, particularly Barbie dolls and antique porcelain dolls which she would sand down and restore and then paint all of its features.
Mildred was very artistic and from an early age in grade school all of the children would come to her and have her make their valentines because she could draw very well.
The family is in appreciation to Mary Marteney, Mildred’s daughter-in-law and main caregiver since 2007. Also special thanks to two sons and caregivers, Steve and Bill Marteney and other family. A special thanks to caregivers over the past 3-4 years, Shirlene Bulka and Casey Edmond and others, special thanks to Broaddus Hospital, United Health Care Nursing Home and The Stone Haven Nursing Home.
Mildred loved her family and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Mildred was a Christian and member of Bethel United Methodist Church until its recent closing.
Her children find comfort in knowing their mother was saved and anyone who accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will see her in Heaven some day and praise our Lord Jesus Christ together with her.
Mildred’s family will receive friends at Wright Funeral Home and on-site Crematory, 220 N. Walnut St. Philippi, on Thursday Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to noon. Funeral services will begin at noon from the funeral home chapel. Mildred will be laid to rest beside her loving husband in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
