Mark Benner Spencer
SPENCER
Mark Benner Spencer, 71, a former resident of Durant, Oklahoma, and for the past four years a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life Thursday evening, Nov. 13, 2025.
He was born Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1954, at Houston, Texas, a son of the late Robert Benner Spencer and Sue Taylor Spencer.
Surviving are two brothers, Paul Taylor Spencer and wife, June of Lavonia, Georgia, and Donald Charles Spencer of Lubbock, Texas; one sister, Renee Ann Spencer and husband, Steve Cooper, of Lexington, Massachusetts; three nephews, Ryan Spencer, Michael Spencer and wife, Tresa, and Kyle Spencer; and three nieces, Taylor Cooper, Megan Jackson and husband, Dustin, and Amanda Vaughn.
Mark obtained three master’s degrees, had earned his Ph.D. in medieval history at the University of Kentucky and a Ph.D. in english at the University of Arkansas. He was a retired professor of english, humanities and languages at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
He was a member of the Friends of the Library for the Elkins-Randolph County Public Library. Mark enjoyed reading and furthering his education. He was an avid outdoorsman, loved hiking, biking and riding motorcycles.
Mark’s request for cremation was honored. A gathering of family and friends will take place at a later date.
