Mary Juanita Akers Underwood

Our Beloved Mother, Mary Juanita Akers Underwood, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Sunday, Dec. 14, 2025, at home with family by her side and under the care of Hospice of Garrett County.

Juanita was born Thursday, Dec. 21, 1939, in Shawsville, Virginia, a daughter of the late George Harvey Akers and Sallie Mae Greene Akers.

Left to cherish her memory are five children, Howard Underwood and wife, Valerie, of East Dailey, Marian "Penny" Thomas of Oakland, Maryland, with whom she resided, William "Billy" Underwood of Elkins, Robert "Jack" Underwood and wife, Jennifer, of Alexandria, Louisiana, and Pamela White and husband, Benson, of Elkins; and one sister, Carol McMahan.

Juanita was blessed with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was a bonus Grandma and Aunt to many.

Preceding her in death besides her parents was her beloved daughter, Karen Elaine Underwood; an infant twin brother; four brothers, John, C.W., Gene and Junior Akers; and four sisters, Myrtle Martin, Alice Martin, Josephine Vest and Ann Vest.

Juanita was a 1959 graduate of Shawsville High School in Shawsville, Virginia.

Juanita worked as a home health care giver for Companion Care for 20-plus years.

During her employment, she was awarded employee of the year numerous times. She was a member of The First Christian Church Of Elkins and Mtn Lake Independent Church of Oakland Maryland. Juanita was loved by everyone who knew her. She loved to cook, showing her love for her family through that act. Juanita loved telling stories of her childhood and adventures growing up on small farm in Shawsville, Virginia, with her loving parents and family.

Her family was her world. Juanita will be forever cherished and greatly missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held at the Randolph Funeral Home Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour.

Rev. S. Kent Price will officiate, and interment will follow in Brick Church Cemetery in Huttonsville.

The Randolph Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements for Mary Juanita Akers Underwood.
