Thomas Leslie "Tom" Coontz, 72, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life Thursday afternoon, Jan. 1, 2026, at the WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital at Wheeling, West Virginia. He had been in declining health.
He was born Sunday, April 12, 1953, at Elkins, West Virginia, a son of the late Thomas Lamont "Tom" Coontz and Margie Rhodes Coontz. On July 5, 1975, he was married to his high school sweetheart, the former Mary Kathryn Goodwin, who survives. They had celebrated 50 years of marriage.
Also surviving are two sons, Matthew Thomas Coontz of Wheeling, and John Martin Coontz and wife, Casey Day, of Huntington; one daughter, Kathryn Marie Green and husband, Timothy James, of Savannah, Georgia; and three grandchildren, Isabella and Amayah Green, and Shepherd Coontz.
Tom was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1971. He had previously worked for the Railroad, Kroger's, was a dispatcher with the police department and retired from Armstrong Manufacturing.
Tom enjoyed playing video games and was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026, at 11 a.m. The Reverend S. Kent Price will officiate and interment will follow at the Valley Bend Cemetery near Belington, West Virginia.
