HELMICK
Junior Paul Helmick Sr. 82, a resident of Parsons (Mt. Zion Community), was called home to the Lord on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center in Elkins with his family by his side. He had been in declining health and under the care of West Virginia Caring.
Junior was born on Thursday, March 30, 1944, at Mt. Zion. On Aug. 28, 1965, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was married to Charlotte Faye Foster, who survives. They had celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Also left to cherish Junior’s memory are two sons, JR Helmick and wife, Tammy, of Parsons, and David Helmick and, wife, Kelly, of Hambleton; one grandson, Trenton Helmick; and three granddaughters, Macy Helmick, Kennide Helmick and Maddy Helmick. Junior is also survived by two sisters, Geneva Dumire and husband, Walter, and Dorothy Cooper and husband, Orville; three brothers, Jerry Helmick and wife, Kemberley, Dennis “Denzil” Helmick and wife, Nancy, and Michael Helmick and wife, Linda; along with many nieces and nephews.
Proceeding Junior in death was his son, John Helmick; parents, Clarence and Helen Helmick, Emmy Helmick; three brothers, David Allen Helmick, Leonard Helmick and Roy “Butch” Helmick; and two sisters, Patty Rhodes and Deloris “Midge” Poling.
Junior was a 1962 graduate of Parsons High School. After high school Junior was employed by Schulte Ford, Caterpillar Inc., Mt. Storm Power Station as a contractor while being a member of the Ironworkers Union, Kingsford Charcoal, R.H. Armstrong Inc. and Harman Construction while a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 132. During these work assignments, Junior helped build the ski slopes of Canaan Valley Resort and Snowshoe Resort (Silver Creek). He also helped with the construction of Jennings Randolph Lake (Bloomington Dam) and many other projects throughout the state.
After the Flood of 1985, he started Helmick Excavating, where he would spend over 25 years completing innumerable jobs for people throughout the community. During his career, he was known for his operating skills on the dozer and backhoe. Junior was also employed as a bus driver at Tucker County Schools for 20 years until his retirement. Junior enjoyed his property on Mt. Zion and spending the winter in Florida.
He was loved by all who knew him and will be missed by his family and friends. One can only imagine his joy seeing friends and family members who have passed before him as he enters the gates of Heaven, especially his son John.
Junior was a devoted Christian and had attended the Hambleton Pentecostal Church of God, Parsons Church of God and Rosendorf Pentecostal Church of God.
Visitation will be on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Hostetler Funeral Home in Parsons from 3 until 5 p.m., with the funeral service at 5 p.m. Rev. Todd Rhodes will officiate, and cremation will then be honored. Special thanks to Mountain Memories and ERCC for the great care for Junior the last several years.
