A life well lived

Rachel Ann Pingley, a beloved member of our community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 21, at the age of 90. She went home to be with her Lord and Savior.

Rachel was known for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering spirit, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to know her. Born on June 14, 1935, to Wilma Belle Murphy Haller and Ray Odbert Haller, Rachel grew up as one of 10 children.

She graduated from Elkins High School in 1953 and immediately joined the United States Air Force. There, she met her first husband, Nova Lawrence Andrews, and they were married in March 1957.

Rachel served as an air traffic control technician until her tour ended in 1957. She remained a dedicated military wife and welcomed four childrenäone at each base where they were stationed, South Carolina, Alabama, Illinois, and Hawaii. Nova Andrews retired from the Air Force in 1973, and the family moved to Colorado. Tragically, he passed away five months later.

In 1975, Rachel returned to Elkins and met her second husband, Kenneth Pingley. They were married in May 1976.Throughout her life, Rachel was a successful businesswoman. She owned a ceramics business in Hawaii, Cake & Candy Supply in Illinois, Nanny’s Kitchen in Elkins, West Virginia (from 1992 to 1998), and represented Avon for over 36 years.

Rachel’s life was a testament to her unwavering spirit and her ability to bring joy to those around her. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Rachel’s passion for community involvement was evident throughout her life. As a longtime member of First Church of Christ in Elkins, she dedicated her time to various charitable organizations. She served with the Memorial General Hospital Auxiliary and the Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center Auxiliary, where she not only contributed but also took on the responsibility of managing the gift shop. Additionally, she held the esteemed position of Auxiliary President of the West Virginia State Hospital Association and actively participated in the Democratic Executive Committee. Rachel’s commitment to the community extended to her service on the Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center Board of Directors from 1988 to 2018. Furthermore, she was a cherished member of the Emma Scott Garden Club since 1978.

Rachel was renowned for her warm hospitality, radiant smile, generous heart, and delectable home-cooked meals. She found immense joy in tending to her flower garden, fishing with her grandchildren, embarking on travels, and cherishing moments spent with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Wilma and Ray Haller, Rachel was preceded in death by her husbands, Nova Andrews and Kenneth Pingley; her daughters, Teresa Andrews and Connie Farlow; and her brothers and sisters, Jack Haller, Madalyn McCrum, Maxine Auvil, Dale Haller, Joe Haller, Billie Gibson, Doretta Gibson, Geneva Irwin and Nancy Bright.

Those left to cherish Rachel’s memory include her son, Nova (Larry) Andrews; her daughter, Joy Smith (Jeff); and her grandchildren, Jennifer Andrews, Zach Andrews (Rebecca), Megan Wilson (Travis), Joshua Smith, Sam Farlow, Allen Farlow (Lydia), and Caroline Nance (Tanner). Her great-grandchildren include, Jemma Fortson, Liam Andrews, Harper Andrews, Phoenix Gay, Nova Farlow, Beckham Nance, Adeline Nance, and Jude Smith. Rachel’s legacy is also carried on by her many beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved her.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the First Church of Christ in Elkins. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, April 28, at 4 p.m. at the church with Preaching Minister Jason Brandon officiating.

Rachel’s remarkable life will be honored and celebrated by all who attend. Interment will follow in the American Legion Little Arlington Cemetery where the presentation of the American Flag will be made by members of the Unites States Air Force.
