Andrew “Pook” Dwight Mahanes Sr. 71, a resident of Belington, passed from this life Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Mon Health in Morgantown.
Andrew was born Wednesday, Jan. 26, 1955, in Elkins, a son of the late Earnest “Pete” Anderson Mahanes and Julia Mae Scott Mahanes.
In 1974, he married Trudy Elaine Mace Mahanes, who preceded him in death on May 4, 2009.
Left to cherish Andrew’s memory are his three children, Becky Higgins and husband, Shawn, Bobby Mahanes and wife, Melissa, and Andy Mahanes and companion, Shonnette Schoonover; four siblings, John Mahanes and wife, Sharon, Hallie Riley and husband, Roger, Eddie Mahanes and wife, Kay, and Margie Riley; two sisters-in-law, Brenda Gail Sandella and husband, Joe, and Nancy Mace; eight grandchildren, Katrina Petrice and husband, Randy, Danielle Mahanes and companion, Zach Droppleman, Deanna Higgins and companion, Cody Coontz, Jacob Higgins and companion, Nicole, Kelsey Mahanes, Dylan Mahanes, Aubree Mahanes and Deven Mahanes; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and Andrew’s companion, Carla Jo Lawrence.
Preceding Andrew in death besides his wife and parents was a daughter Jennifer Mahanes; mother- and father-in-law, Mona and Charles Mace; a brother, Steven Mahanes; four brothers-in-law, Charles “Chuck” Mace, Lenny Mace, Jerry Mace and Ernie Riley, two nephews, Gary Riley and Steven Mahanes; and one sister-in-law, Iris Riffle.
Andrew attended the schools of Randolph County and had worked as a coal miner at Carter-Roag Coal Company, DeMotto Peerless Coal Company, Badger Coal Company, and Arch Coal Company. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding four wheelers and side-by- sides. He appreciated spending time with friends and family. He loved his grandkids and helping anyone he could.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour.
Interment will follow at Phillips Cemetery in Jimtown.
