John Thayer
John Thayer, 89, a resident of Mountain Memories Assisted Living & Retirement Center in Elkins, passed away Sunday evening, May 31, 2026, at the facility under the care of West Virginia Caring Hospice.
He was born March 24, 1937, at Tioga, West Virginia, a son of the late William Getty Thayer and the late Masil Radcliff Thayer.
He was twice married.
First to Miyong Thayer, who preceded him in death, and later to Barbara Hilton Thayer, who survives in Elkins.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Judy and Frankie; and one brother, Terry.
Also preceding him in death was one brother William.
John was a Veteran of the United States Army and attended Potomac State College and was a graduate of West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forest Management.
He was employed by the State of West Virginia Department of Natural Resources Forestry Division as a County Forester for 25 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m.Friday, June 5, 2026, from the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Rick Price officiating.
Interment will follow in the Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Country Club Road. Memorial contributions may be made to the Randolph County Humane Society, PO Box 785, Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of John.
