Mona M. Turner (nee Woods), 93, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 11, 2026, surrounded by her family.
She was born Feb. 8, 1933, in Beverly, West Virginia, to James A. and Hazel Mae (nee Howell) Woods. Mona married Lawrence Turner Jan. 5, 1952, and were married 73 years until his passing in 2025.
She was a homemaker and founding member of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years.
Mona is survived by sons, Lawrence “Skeeter” Jr. (wife, Beverly) of Elkins, West Virginia, and Stanley (partner, Margaret) Turner of Elyria; daughter, Denise (husband, Pete) Compher of Stephens City, Virginia; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mona was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by brothers, Woodrow, James, Arthur, Robert and William Woods; sisters, Dorothy Layne, Sylvia Judy, Nancy Ramsey and Linda Humphreys; and a grandchild.
Friends will be received Friday July 17, 2026, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday from the funeral home chapel with Brother Jim Judy officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.
