Harold Glen Karlen Jr., 83, a resident of Georgetown Road Elkins, passed from this life Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, at Mountain Memories Assisted Living in Elkins.
Glen was born Saturday, Dec. 26, 1942, in Elkins, a son of the late Harold Glen Karlen Sr. and Margaret “Marg” Lola Evans Karlen Carr. On July 13, 1963, he married Sandra Sue Skidmore Karlen, who preceded him in death on Sept. 5, 2025. They celebrated 62 years of marriage.
Left to cherish Glen's memory are three children, Michael Karlen and wife, Susan, Schell Hopwood and husband, Kurt, Scott Karlen and wife Lisa, all of Elkins; grandchildren, Jima Karlen and companion, Jon, Amber Gainer and husband, Cody, Kollin Hopwood and wife, Katie, Karli Harlan and husband, Cole, Alec Karlen and companion, Hunter, Isabella Karlen and fiance, Ben, and Hudson; great-grandchildren, Andi, Karder, Max, Woods and Kooper; a half brother, Terry Allen Carr and wife, Brenda; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Glen in death besides his wife and parents was one brother Thomas David Karlen and wife, Patty.
Glen was a graduate of Elkins High School and went on to earn a master's degree from Marshall University. His desire to learn never ceased as he continued his education both formal and through life experiences. He had worked as a machinist in his early years before focusing his attention on educating future generations. It was at Tucker County VoTech where he began teaching machine shop and welding. Later, he moved to Randolph County Technical Center overseeing diversified co-op to bring students to potential career opportunities where he would eventually serve as principal. His educational career concluded by becoming the longest serving superintendent for Randolph County Schools with eight years of service. He had also served with the Randolph County Development Authority and continued to be active in observing everything that was being developed in the county.
His great passion was for the kids of Randolph County both academically and in all sports. He was frequently seen at as many county sporting events as he could get to eventually receiving a lifetime pass. He was also an avid WVU Mountaineer fan of all sports.
Glen loved his family and especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed family gatherings and spending time on his farm enjoying nature. He hunted on the farm in his early years, but over the last several years, it was more about family time with some snacks.
Glen's request for cremation was honored. A private celebration of life will with his family will be held at a later date.
