Mr. Howard Richard Shaw, 87, a resident of Belington departed this life early Wednesday morning Sept. 9, 2026, in the Davis Medical Center at Elkins, West Virginia. Death was following a period of declining health.
He was born April 7, 1939, at Moatsville, West Virginia, a son of the late Charles Edward “Peck” and Opal Rebecca Dennison Shaw. On Dec. 31, 1958 at Moatsville, West Virginia, he was united in marriage to the former Etheleen Ruth Wilson, who survives at their home in Belington.
In addition to his wife, those left to cherish his memory are two children, Kathie Jean DeGard and husband, Keith, of Whiting, Indiana, and Randy Howard Shaw of Belington; two brothers, Lyle Shaw of Michigan and George Shaw of Grafton. Additional survivors include two granddaughters, Kiesha Duke and Christina Shaw; and seven great-grandchildren, Ethan Duke, Eli Duke, Jenna Boukal, Kayla Boukal, Caleb Boukal, Jade Gordan and Baron Shaw; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and his sweet cat, Ranger.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Ray Shaw, Bill Shaw, Kenny Shaw, Bob Shaw and Davey Shaw; and one sister, Katherine Young.
Howard attended the schools of Barbour County and was a graduate from the Kasson High School with the class of 1957. He was a member and former Deacon of the Light of Christ Chapel in Belington. He joined the United States Army and retired as Sgt 1st class, serving from 1958-1980 for the first two years he served as an Army photographer and then specializing in chemical warfare. Following retirement from the Army he was employed by Wendling's Food Service as a truck driver for a period of 20 years. He loved going to the local restaurants and to the senior center to socialize.
He loved to travel, especially while in the service. His service travels allowed him and his family to call many places home. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home 56 N. Brandenburg Street in Belington on Monday Sept. 14, 2026 from noon 2 p.m. at which time a funeral service will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jimmie E. Tallman officiating. Per Howard's request cremation will then follow. Full Military Rites will be accorded from the funeral home chapel by the United States Army and the American Legion Post 96 of Belington.
