James Montgomery Isner Jr., 87, of Charleston passed away Aug. 31, 2026, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
A United States Army Veteran, he spent time at Fort Meade, Maryland and served overseas in Germany. He then studied and played football at West Virginia Tech. He was retired and had spent his working years as a rehabilitation counselor for the State of South Carolina, and a sales manager for Jim Lambert Auto, Elkins, and for Royás Home Sales in Harman. After retirement he enjoyed working at Target, South Charleston, was an avid walker, gardener and loved spending time with his family and dogs.
Preceding him in death were his parents, James M. Sr. and Mary Margaret Knutti Isner; father and mother-in-law, Craig and Nellie Hiner; brother-in-law, John Wanless; nephew, John Wanless Jr.; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Hiner.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Hiner Isner; son, Matthew James Isner (Alice); and grandsons Montgomery and Sammy Isner of Richmond, Virginia; sisters, Norma Wanless, Sara Gum (Billy) both of Elkins; and nephews, Joe Wanless of Elkins, Michael Hiner (Traci) of St. Albans; niece, Jennifer Wanless of Elkins, as well as great-nephews and nieces, and many other caring family members and friends.
Committal services with military rites were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, in Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg.
