Marvin D. “Shorty” Currence, 99, a resident of Cassity, passed away peacefully on Sept. 11, 2026, at Mountain Memories Assisted Living & Retirement Center in Elkins under the care of WV Caring Hospice.
Shorty was born in Hemlock, West Virginia, on Aug. 12, 1927. He was the son of the late Jacob and Almira Currence. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lillian DeGarmo Currence; brothers, Junior, Carrol, Jimmie, Lady and Buddy; and a sister, Macel Tenney.
His surviving siblings are one brother, Clyde from Buckhannon; and four sisters, Zella Pastine, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Eleanor DeMotto, of Buckhannon, Deloris Shank, Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Mary Hall (Brockie), of Charlottesville, Virginia. Also surviving is a special nephew, Roger Zirkle, who served as his faithful devoted caregiver and trusted friend for the past several years. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Shorty proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Germany. One of his positions in the military was an aid driver on a halftrack mobile vehicle for General Patton. Being a talented musician, he often entertained the troops by playing his fiddle. After his honorable discharge, he became an employee for Coastal Lumber Company, where he served as a foreman for over 35 years. After retiring from Coastal, he used his musical talents for the upbuilding of God's Kingdom by singing and playing his fiddle in churches throughout the state of West Virginia with his family. He also was a member of a group led by Virgil White, called the Bluegrass Gospel Boys. His brother Clyde was also a member of this group.
Shorty was a life-long member of the VFW Post 5583 in Coalton, West Virginia, and a member of American Legion Post 29 in Elkins. During his younger years, Shorty was an avid motor cyclist and enjoyed exploring West Virginia on his Harley. Thus, he was a member of the Harley Davidson Ride for Life Club.

Shorty's family is most grateful for the tender loving care that the staff at Mountain Memories provided for Shorty the past two years.
