Bernettie Pennington Gnegy, 93s, a former resident of Mackeyville, West Virginia, and more recently a resident of the greater Roanoke area, Virginia, departed this life late Tuesday evening, Sept. 15, 2026.
She was born a daughter of the late Gladys Pennington of Mackeyville, West Virginia, and the late Howard Poling of Coeur D' Alene, Idaho, on Friday July 28, 1933.
Her mother encouraged her to enter the Capitol City School of Nursing, 19th and E ST. SE in Washington, D.C., from which she received her RN (Registered Nurse) degree in 1955.
She married Donald Cline Gnegy, a son of Walter Clyne and Annie Hill Forsythe Gnegy, on Sept. 11, 1955. They were happily married just over 60 years before his death in 2015.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna Bernettie (William J.) Spradlin and Deborah Ann (Michael L.) Graham; two granddaughters, Tina M. Saunders (Josh) and Michelle A. Cassell (Evan); and great-grandchildren, Jase Carbaugh and Meadow Saunders. Surviving family in Idaho is sister, Patricia Wilson.
She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1951. She was a member of the Parsons Chapter 91, Order of the Eastern Star and Saint John's Lutheran Church of Davis, West Virginia. She worked as a Registered Nurse for many years in hospitals in Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania and at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant Hospital for over 15 years.
Those who knew Bernettie knew that she loved her family deeply, the farm in West Virginia, and her pets, most recently Zee and Bonnie.
The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of a contribution to St. John's Lutheran Church in Davis, WV 315 Blackwater Ave. Davis, WV 26260, or to the Parsons City Cemetery 341 2nd St, Parsons, WV 26287.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons from noon to 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, 2026. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, at 1 p.m. Pastor Ruth Bullwinkle will officiate, and interment will follow at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, West Virginia. Full Military Honors will be accorded for her husband, Donald Cline Gnegy, at the time of interment.
