Michael Eugene Mace

MACE

Michael Eugene Mace, 81, passed unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026, at home in Midland, Virginia.

He was born in Elkins, West Virginia, on Jan. 29, 1945. Michael spent his formative years being raised by his aunt, Vivian, and uncle, Edward Hughes, alongside their children, and his close cousins, Johnny and Sherry.

He held many jobs throughout his life, and was most proud of being a blaster for the strip mining industry. In 1965, he met and married the love of his life, Addie Currence. Together, they raised four wonderful daughters whom he loved deeply, and who loved him just as much in return.

Though Michaelás life was filled with hard work and deep family bonds, it was not without hardship nor challenges. He faced significant medical and physical challenges, successfully beating lung cancer, surviving an accident that cost him the tip of his finger, and later undergoing a below-the-knee amputation due to complications from diabetes. Despite these misfortunes, Michael never let his spirit be broken. He faced every obstacle with a bright and sunny disposition.

Michael spent the final years of his life surrounded by family, living with his daughter, Chrissy, and son-in-law, Carlo. He brought joy and laughter to the house daily, especially enjoying joking around with Carlo, sitting outside and enjoying nature with Chrissy, having a weekly iced coffee with Jodi, and video chatting with Jeanette. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, love, and laughter.

Michael is survived by three daughters, Jeanette Maher of Supply, North Carolina, Christine Bertelli and her husband, Carlo, of Midland, Virginia, and Jodi Scarsdale and her husband, Keith, of Culpeper, Virginia; special friend, Valery Danzig, of Mill Creek, West Virginia; three sisters, Linda Stevens and her husband, Robert of Joppa, Maryland, Patricia Andreasik also of Joppa and Sherry Thomas and her husband, Harl, of Nitro, West Virginia; three grandchildren, Jamie M., Ryan and Jamie B.; and several great-grandchildren.

Michael is preceded in death by his wife, Addie Mace; mother, Violet Candal; a daughter, Jese Mace; grandson, Bryan Mace; and five siblings, Jean, Charlie, Joey, George and Johnny.

A graveside service will be held at Valley Head cemetery on Conley Run Road in Valley Head, West Virginia, on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
