Starting new services during a pandemic

We have been scrambling to get the Kump Education Center Altice Learning Lab ready for in-person tutoring in an environment where tutors and students will be as safe from COVID-19 as possible during the spring semester and summer school.

We will still need to follow rules for social distancing, mask wearing, and frequent cleaning, but the air will be cleaner with our new heat pump featuring an “Air Scrubbing” system using UV light.

Thanks to Triangle Heating & Cooling Inc. we believe we have the best air quality we can get in our learning lab.

Each time we tried to begin tutoring services last fall, quarantining at the college or case counts in the county would interrupt our plans. Virus cases are increasing now after the winter holidays, and we are moving more slowly with plans for in-person tutoring.

We started with tutoring on Zoom in November. When more tutors are vaccinated and fewer covid-19 cases are developing in the county, we will begin in-person tutoring at Kump Education Center.

Chris Jones, Director of Career Services at Davis & Elkins College, was a great help in finding wonderful tutors last fall, and we hope these tutors will have time to work with students this semester. However, their spring schedule is different from the Randolph County School schedule, and they will finish their spring semester in early May.

We will need to offer after-school tutoring in May, and we will plan to have tutoring earlier in the day during the summer months. We are looking for retired teachers and other educated adults in town who would like to begin tutoring with Zoom now and/or plan to work with students throughout the spring and summer.

Schedules will vary according to the needs of students and the availability of tutors. Volunteers will be welcome.

We will pay tutors by the hour according to their qualifications. Most tutors will work only a few hours a week, and we do not expect to schedule more than 20 hours a week for one tutor.

Anyone who is working with school children must have a background check before in-person activities begin. Please send letters of interest and resumes to Kump Education Center, Post Office Box 1106, Elkins, WV 26241 or email me at heatherbiola@yahoo.com.
