Effects Alzheimer’s has on the brain

By Chrissy Kittle 3 min read

I wanted to go over the effects Alzheimer's disease has on the brain. When someone starts to show signs of memory loss --not forgetfulness, but true memory loss -- the brain is being consumed by plaques and tangles from specific proteins. Imagine cobwebs overtaking your brain, a large percentage of the brain. Once this happens, brain cells start to malfunction, and eventually die off. The death of brain cells is what causes all of the different issues you may see, such as not being able to recall a certain word, getting lost in places that have been visited daily, not recognizing family members, and so on. All the while, the brain is continuing to shrink, causing the person to not learn any new activities or habits either.

As much as I wish I could talk about how to cure this issue, I can only give ways to help slow the progression.

Several experts discuss eating a healthy diet, including healthy fats and oils, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Other needs for the healthy diet consist of antioxidants (berries) and omega 3-fatty acids, which can be found in fish.

Other preventions include staying mentally active: work sudoku, puzzles, read, and learn a new skill, such as playing a musical instrument. Learning a new activity fires brain cells in different areas of the brain, to help keep that section healthy. Staying mentally active is something I have discussed in several different issues. Activity, mentally and physically, is essential to brain health, heart health, and overall health of the body.

Quality sleep is vital as well. Adults should be getting between 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Are you getting that much sleep? I feel most adults, who experience daily stress from work and families, are not able to meet that amount of time required. If you are a snorer or have sleep apnea, you really need to see a doctor regarding C Pap or Bi Pap, as needed. These mechanisms are hard to get used to and I feel several people do not use theirs as prescribed, but once you are used to it, it is almost impossible to go without. I have witnessed loved ones prior to use and after, and it is amazing the difference. Prior to use, people are groggy when waking up, lethargic, and can doze off several times throughout the day. After using consistently, the grogginess goes away and I no longer see naps being taken. I know the C-Pap and BI-Pap are cumbersome, but the advantages outweigh the harm that people face. Another alternative is a CPAP surgical implant that helps deliver positive airway pressure to the lungs. Please get with your attending physician to discuss the importance of treating sleep apnea.

Lastly, I will discuss heart health. What is good for your heart, is good for your brain. Manage your blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes the best that you can. Also limit alcohol consumption and avoid smoking.

Living a healthy lifestyle is hard. Join a Facebook group, exercise class, and get several people to be a part of your journey.
