Building a vibrant community
“Great communities make us feel grounded, protected and empowered. They provide jobs and solid economic growth. They attract new talents and keep existing talent from leaving town. They do a great job of educating young people, they provide safe neighborhoods, and they nurture the health and well-being of all citizens. They provide a sense of belonging, connection and support. And they’re just more fun to live in.”
— From “Building a Vibrant Community” by Quint Studer.
A vibrant community does not just happen. It is created strategically and intentionally by the local community. Elkins/Randolph County has been going through the process for the last five years. It is a process which involves many individuals, organizations and businesses working on the common goal of making the community better. Along the way there are many successes – and a few disappointments. And through the process Elkins and Randolph County has grown and developed.
The growth of a Vibrant Community does not happen overnight and often goes unnoticed. As a quick summary – in 2020 the rail trail was completed to Elkins, Great Harvest Bread opened, AHF expanded and Mon Forest communities started. In 2021 the U-Hall Center opened, Valley Health expanded and five store fronts opened in Elkins. In 2022 three Elkins buildings changed hands, 22nd Century Technologies opened, City parking lot was paved and Holiday Inn completed their expansion. For 2023 the Randolph Swimming Pool opened, Ascend came to Elkins, Trickett’s Hardware changed hands and Big Timber opened their new location. In 2024 the Tygart Hotel opened, Charm Farm expanded, Augusta purchased the Wilt and the Odd Fellows home sold. And there a many, many more developments which are not listed.
In March 2020, Quint Studer held a workshop and spoke at the Chamber annual banquet. He provided ideas and concepts which were translated into action steps by several Elkins/Randolph County residents.
On March 12 and 13, Quint Studer will be back in Elkins for additional discussions. It will be a great opportunity to set sights for building a Vibrant Community for 2030 and beyond.
The Chamber is providing coordination as we count down towards the March meeting with Quint Studer and the concepts of his book, “Building a Vibrant Community.”
