Barbour County welcomes in Barktober, Halloween

Hello from Barbour County. We have received some much-needed rain recently, but the river is still pretty low.

Animal Friends of Barbour County will be having Barktober Fest today at 17 North in Philippi. Come on out for music, food and fun. Festivities begin at 6 p.m.

The Mikey Hart Memorial Scholarship Fund will be having its annual purse Bingo at the Junior Volunteer Fire Department on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1:30 p.m., with doors opening at 12:30. For more information, contact Judy at 304-614-3118.

Out of the Darkness Community Walk is coming to Philippi on Sunday, Oct. 12. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Join them as they walk to prevent suicide and raise awareness.

Philippi Main Street will be having a public walking visioning tour on Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 6-7 p.m. They will be looking for ways to utilize existing buildings and would like your input, so come out and join them.

Asbury U.M. Church will be having a Buckwheat Feed on Oct. 18 from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. There is a cost for adults to attend, and a lesser cost for children ages 12 and under.

The Mt. Liberty community is excited to announce their 40th Fall Festival on Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. The day is always packed full of music, food, vendors, and of course, their famous apple butter that will be made on site. The evening will end with a cake walk.

Also on Oct. 18, Flannel Fest will take place in Philippi. From 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., there will be live music, food, vendors, fun and plenty of flannel!

There will be a Holiday Bingo Bash on Oct. 19 at the Belington Fire Department Hall to benefit the Strutters Baton and Dance Team. Doors open at 1 p.m. and the games start at 2 p.m. For more information, contact Tiffany at 304-614-6614.

Audra Park community will be having their 6th annual Trunk or Treat on Oct. 25 at the Upper Pavillion Picnic Area. Treater set up begins at 3 p.m. The pumpkin court begins at 4:30 p.m., costume contest begins at 5, and trunk or treating will be at 5:30.

Shop N Save Express is once again presenting Trick or Treat at the Barbour County Fairgrounds. This event seems to be bigger and better every year! This will take place on Oct. 28 from 5:30-7 p.m. More than 50 local businesses and vendors will be passing out treats.

Trick or treating in Belington will be Oct. 31 from 6-7:30 p.m. In Philippi, there will be trick or treating from 5:30-7 p.m. on Main Street. Once all the festivities are over, at 7:30, head over to the VFW Park in Belington for the After Party. There will be a bonfire, costume contest, scary stories and more.

Barbour Community Health Association is excited to announce its 14th annual Turkey Trot 5K Walk/Run on Nov. 1. This event raises money every year to help both the Heart & Hand House and the Belington Presbyterian Church as they feed around 400 people every Thanksgiving Day. The 5K race starts at 9 a.m. at the Belington Wellness Center, and there is a cost to enter.

Battler’s Knob will be hosting a Ladies Night Out on Nov. 6. Doors open at 6 p.m., with dinner served at 7. There is a cost for tickets, which include a chance at door prizes as well as dinner. There will be games, raffles and a ton of fun! This is sponsored by the Phillips Family Foundation.

Battler’s Knob will be having a Veteran’s Day salute on Nov. 8 to honor all who have served. There will be a 5K Ruck & Run at 7 a.m. At 11 a.m., there will be a Field of Honor Ceremony, and at 1 p.m., a Quilts for Veterans Presentation. At 3:30 p.m., they will have a WV Military Film Screening, and to finish off the evening, at 6 p.m. there will be Live Patriotic Entertainment.

The American Legion in Philippi hosts Bingo the first Friday of each month, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Snacks can be purchased to support the Lions Club. Come out and join in the fun.
