Boos & Applause

Applause to Elks Lodge No. 1135 of Elkins for giving back to the community. Four schools in Randolph County, including Harman School, George Ward Elementary School, Coalton Elementary School and Midland Elementary School received donations of school supplies. Each of the schools received 18 backpacks filled with supplies. The Elks Lodge is a valuable asset to the community providing donations throughout the community all year long.

Applause to Alderson Broaddus University for the 28 members of the school’s physician assistant studies program achieving a 100% overall pass rate on the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam. PANCE is considered the gold standard certification among physician assistants and the medical field.

Applause to the women of the Julia Bonafield Circle of the First United Methodist Church. Each year the ladies prepare a basket of baby items for the first baby born on Valentine’s Day at the Davis Medical Center in Elkins.

Boo to the administration of a northern West Virginia medical center for announcing it would be shutting down and informing employees by way of a letter. CEO Bob Adcock of Fairmont Regional Medical Center notified more than 600 employees by mail that the 207-bed hospital would close. The California-based Alecto Healthcare also closed hospitals in Wheeling and Martins Ferry, Ohio. Surely this is not the end of the story, and if it is, shouldn’t there have been a better way to let the loyal medical professionals know their outcome than a letter?

Applause to Elkins Fourth Ward City Councilwoman Karen Wilmoth for addressing the concerns of the people of Chestnut and Baxter Streets over the closed Elkins Swinging Bridge that crosses the Tygart Valley River. Although Elkins city officials say they do not know who owns the swinging bridge, they had the right to remove the entry ramps on both sides of the river due to safety concerns. The removal of the ramps and the fencing off of the bridge made unusable the structure that many local residents relied on for access to city services. Although this bridge is not in Councilwoman Wilmoth’s ward, we applaud her for keeping this topic top of mind for the citizens who are affected.
