According to Secretary of State Mac Warner's office, 841 new businesses registered with the state of West Virginia in June.
Although off pace from previous months, the figure still is significant, as the Mountain State fully emerges from the pandemic.
According to the report, Wirt County led the state in percentage of new business growth through June, with a total of four new registrations, a 2.06% increase.
Locally, Tucker County ranked the highest of the counties in our region, placing eighth in the state, with seven new business registrations, a 1.06% increase.
The other counties in our region placed farther down the list, with Upshur County having 10 new registrations, for a 0.72% increase; Pocahontas having six new registrations, for a 0.63% increase; Randolph having 10 new registrations, for a 0.62% increase; and Barbour having three new registrations, for a 0.43% increase.
Counties that led the state in total businesses registered for June were Kanawha, Berkeley, Monongalia, Jefferson and Cabell. Kanawha County successfully registered 87 businesses, while Berkeley County reported 72 new registrations. Monongalia County had 65 businesses register. Cabell County totaled 45 new registrations.
Statewide, West Virginia has registered 13,229 new businesses in the previous 12-month period, from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023. Jefferson County led all 55 counties with a 19.31% growth rate during the one-year timespan. Berkeley County saw 17.95% growth, while Morgan County saw an 18.95% growth rate during that period.
In the past six months, 6,041 businesses have registered with the Secretary of State's office.
All good news that shows considerable growth throughout the state.
Overall, all 55 counties saw growth in the past 12-month period, from the high of 19.31% to the low -- Webster County -- at 9.93%.
With any luck, this trend will continue far into the future.
