* Applause to all the trick-or-treat events scheduled around the region in the coming days. The Inter-Mountain has been publishing a list of all the official trick-or-treat times in the area communities in each edition, and will continue to do so through Tuesday's edition. Today many activities are scheduled in downtown Elkins, including trick-or-treating at downtown businesses, which will take place from noon to 2 p.m., with Davis Avenue and Third Street being the point of emphasis. Several of the businesses on Davis Avenue will also offer a Halloween Bash from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the area where Byrd's House of Donuts and Clementine's Closet is located.
Also, today from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., Our Town Inc. will have a trick-or-treat tent set up at the Bialek Station Square Office Complex, where it will collect Christmas Tree ornaments while handing out treats to children. During the same time slot, the Randolph County Humane Society will host an adoption event billed as "Howl-O-Ween" at the Seneca Mall Atrium.
Also from 12-2 p.m., a Trunk-or-Treat event will be offered at the Elkins McDonald's restaurant at 446 Randolph Ave. No purchase is necessary to take part in the event.
First United Methodist Church will host its annual Fall Festival from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature a large number of activities for children at the church on Kerens Avenue.
* Applause to the Alderson Broaddus University alumni who are planning "One More Mountaintop Memory" on the campus of the now-closed school today. A short ceremony is planned at 3 p.m. Saturday in the courtyard in front of New Main/Burbick Hall. The event is for former AB students, alumni, faculty and staff to get together to pay tribute to the school and "to reminisce about our time at AB," according to a social media post about the ceremony. Organizers plan to offer several musical performances featuring "distinguished music alumni," as well as prayers, and remarks by "individuals that played an important role in your life as a college student," the post states. Attendees are asked to bring "lawn chairs and anything else to make it an enjoyable day." Officials hope to have food trucks present for the event.
* Applause to Gino's Pizza and Spaghetti House, which marked half a century of serving Elkins and the surrounding community with a week-long celebration of its 50th anniversary. The restaurant has been a staple in the area since it first opened at its Davis Street location on Oct. 23, 1973. Frank Santmyer, who has owned and operated the establishment since the beginning, said the restaurant's longevity is due to support from the community and his employees. "It's been a wonderful 50 years," Santmyer told The Inter-Mountain this week. "We have given to the community and the community has given back to us."
* Applause to the organizers of a dedication ceremony for 10 "You Matter" buddy benches last weekend that will be placed at local schools. The dedication event was put together by a retired Randolph County Schools teacher, who asked to remain anonymous, so as not to take credit from the volunteers and donors who have helped make the project a success. Pastor Frank Hinzman, of the Home of the Soul Family Worship Center, performed the dedication of the benches. This is the second annual dedication ceremony for buddy benches; in a ceremony in September 2022, 10 benches were dedicated, and were then placed at Randolph County schools.
