House fires can start with the simplest of activities if we aren't careful.
Fire departments across the United States and Canada are recognizing Fire Prevention Week.
The theme this year is, "Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention."
According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the U.S. -- 49% -- with unattended cooking being of particular concern.
NFPA data, in fact, shows cooking is the only major cause of fires that resulted in more fires and fire deaths from 2014 to 2018 than in 1980 to 1984.
Fire officials offer some tips when it comes to cooking and fire safety, including always keep a close eye on what you are cooking and to set a timer to remind you in the event you get distracted.
Pot handles should be turned toward the back of the stove, and a lid should be kept nearby. That way, in the event a small grease fire starts, the lid can be slid over the pan and allow the resident to turn off the burner.
Residents also are reminded to have a kid- and pet-free zone of at least three feet around a stove or grill and anywhere else hot food is prepared or carried.
The key, of course, is to remain vigilant, and, in the event a fire does take place, to remain educated on the best ways to address them. That includes calling your local emergency services.
Fire Prevention Week has been observed in the United States for more than 100 years, with a campaign each October. It's something to keep in mind year-round, though, in order to better protect ourselves and others.
