Applause to the Mountain Loggers Group, which last week presented WVU Medicine Children's Hospital with a check for $191,000. The donation funding is raised each year during the Ted Harriman Memorial Log-A-Load for Kids Auction, which takes place during the Mountain State Forest Festival at Newlons International Sales in Elkins. This year's total is the most the organization has raised since it started donating to WVU Medicine Children's Hospital back in 2006. In 2022, the Mountain Loggers raised more than $170,000 for the hospital.
Applause to the Old Brick Playhouse in Elkins, which is celebrating 33 years of serving the community. The Playhouse is well-known for the OBP Apprenticeship program for middle and high school students. The OBP conducts two sessions throughout the year and produces two mainstage productions showcasing the talents of every student. Currently, the OBP Apprentices -- 58 strong -- are rehearsing "Mean Girls," a musical that opens at the end of January.
Applause to the Tygart Valley Scottish Rite Masons, who raised $5,000 this year, and recently presented donations to local organizations. Because of successful fundraising, including the Masons raffling off a mini-chopper motorcycle during its annual picnic, the organization was able to add additional charities to this year's Christmas list. This year's donations went to FOP Lodge No. 104 for its annual Christmas Party ($750); Philippi Police Department and the Philippi Detachment of West Virginia State Police for its Shop with a Cop Program ($500); West Virginia University Rite Care Foundation ($1000); Charleston Childhood Language Center ($500); Tucker County Family Resource Center for its Children Nutrition and Backpack Program; and the Grant County Sheriff's Association for its Shop with a Cop Program in Grant, Hardy, and Pendleton counties ($1,547).
Applause to West Virginia Wesleyan College , which will host the West Virginia Governor's School for the Arts for the summers 2024 to 2026, officials announced this week. WVWC previously hosted the West Virginia Governor's School for the Arts from 2014-2016. The dates for the Summer 2024 program are June 23-July 13.
Applause to having something fun to do this weekend, which should be no problem considering all the community events being offered. The First Baptist Church of Elkins will host its second annual "Night in Bethlehem" event today in the parking lot adjacent to the church. The church parking lot will transform into the ancient town of Bethlehem during the event, which is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Also in Elkins, American Legion Post 29 will host a Christmas Party today from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. for children ages 12 years and under. The event will feature pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, snacks, making cards for veterans, and also some small gifts. A Holiday Craft Show will be at the Davis & Elkins College Memorial Gymnasium today from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. The event is sponsored by the D&E Student Nurses Association. Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, at 302 First Street, Elkins will offer a fundraiser today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with proceeds to benefit the WVU Lutheran Campus Ministry. And on Sunday, a Human Rights Celebration will be at the historic Kump House, 401 Randolph Ave. in Elkins, at 3 p.m. There's a lot to do this weekend, so get out and enjoy yourselves!
