Participating groups include Elkins Tree Board, Tygart Valley Master Naturalists, Master Gardener Volunteers, Interact Children's Museum, Project Learning Tree, Friends of Trees, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Forestry Service, Our Town, Centers Against Violence, Mountain Heart & Birth to Three, Appalachian National Forest Heritage Area, Plant the Seed, Elkins Area Shared Trails (EAST), Emma Scott Garden Club, and GREENWORKS of Davis & Elkins College. Woodsy the Owl will greet children as they roam from one activity to another.
Applause to all the volunteers working to present the ninth annual West Virginia Autism Supportive Center's "Light the Night" 5K run and walk, set for Friday, April 26 at River Bend Park. Pre-registration is recommended for competitors wishing to receive a t-shirt from the race. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with running and walking getting underway at 6:30 p.m. Both adults and children can compete in the 5K and each participant can choose whether to run or walk. There will be awards given out for first-, second- and third-place finishers. Snacks and drinks will also be available for competitors. To pre-register for the event, call 304-614-4904.
Applause to the City of Elkins' new mass notification system aimed at strengthening emergency communication, which has been in place less than a month but has already been put to the test by last week's extreme weather. Last week's heavy rain storms lead to flooding in Elkins and throughout the region. "I was able to send out a mass notification during the flooding event to alert everyone in the system of the flooding happening on South Randolph Avenue and to help direct people to 11th Street instead," City Communication Specialist Jeremy Deighan said. "This system gives us the ability to quickly respond to major events happening in the area, such as the flooding, and is a key tool for communicating to the public."
Applause to pending construction of new restrooms for 4-H Camp Pioneer. The Randolph County Commission approved a bid for the construction recently. Sarah Cunningham, executive director at 4-H Camp Pioneer, told commissioners that re-doing the bathrooms has become a priority. Because of some upcoming events that are scheduled at 4-H Camp Pioneer this summer, Cunningham said work on the bathrooms needed to begin as soon as possible.
