Applause to all the candidates running in the May 14 Primary Election, including those on the ballot in Randolph County, who are listed in our Primary Election Guide, which begins on Page B1 of today's edition. Please take the time to learn about the candidates in the races before doing your duty in our American democracy by casting your vote.
Applause to the many volunteers who have worked hard in recent weeks to present the 14th annual Ramps and Rail Festival, which kicks off at 10 a.m. today at the Elkins Railroad Depot in downtown Elkins. This year's event will run through 4 p.m., featuring live music, ramp dishes, train rides provided by the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad, and more. Music on the Rotary Amphitheater stage will kick off with a two-hour set from the Jesse Milnes Band at 11 a.m. Johnny Cochran and the Buckshot Band will then perform from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. As part of today's excitement, the he Highlands Trail Foundation will host its annual Ramps & Rail Festival bike ride along the Allegheny Highlands Trail today. The event, which is free and open to all skill levels, will get underway at approximately 10 a.m. Registration for the ride will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Elkins Railroad Depot. Each participant must wear a helmet and sign a waiver. A parent or guardian must accompany and sign for children under the age of 18. Riders will depart from the depot and return in time to enjoy everything the festival has to offer, officials said.
Applause to the opportunity presented by the Tygart Valley United Way announcing this week that it is currently seeking volunteers for the sixth annual Day of Action. Each year, United Ways across the country come together to celebrate the first day of summer with a nationwide day of volunteer service. This year's special volunteer initiative will be held in Tygart Valley's five-county region that includes Randolph, Marion, Taylor, Barbour and Tucker counties. Organizations from each county will host volunteers on June 21 from noon to 4 p.m. Kick-off events are scheduled for Elkins and Fairmont at 11 a.m. The Randolph County Senior Center, Meals on Wheels Randolph County, Randolph County Family Resource Network, Randolph Climb, Randolph-Tucker Children's Advocacy Center, Randolph County Humane Society, and the Kump Education Center are some of the local organizations already signed up for Day of Action. This will be the sixth annual Day of Action event hosted by the Tygart Valley United Way. All participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt and lunch before starting their projects.
