Applause to the organizers and volunteers who are bringing us the annual Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs event today at the Phil Gainer Community Center. This year's HOFNOD will run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and will feature familiar activities include the rock climbing wall, fishing pond, gemstone mine, archery tag, and fishing simulator. A new addition this year is a mobile aquarium on a trailer that will be full of fish. There is no cost to attend the event, and all the activities are focused on promoting outdoor recreation and educating local youth about the dangers of drug use. Local law enforcement agencies, including the Elkins City Police, Randolph County Sheriff's Office, West Virginia State Police, and the state DNR will also be present at today's event.
Applause to everyone who took advantage of early voting this week. In-person early voting began Wednesday across West Virginia, leading up to the state Primary Election on May 14. Days and hours for community early voting locations will vary by county. Randolph County voters seeking to cast their ballots early for the Primary Election can do so at the Weese Annex on Randolph Avenue in Elkins, or at the Russell Memorial Library in Mill Creek. Early voting will be available from today through May 11, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 and Saturday, May 11.
Applause to the organizers and participants involved in the 14th annual Kump Education Research Seminar held last week in the Learning Lab of the Kump House. The yearly event provides an opportunity for local college students to share their experiences while teaching in area schools. Students of Dr. Scott Biola and department chair Melanie Gribble attended the event and made presentations on "The Science of Reading" and "21st Century Strategies for Evaluating Online Sources." Davis & Elkins College students Kelsey Mahanes, Hannah Phillips, Hattie Pilcher, Anna Kate Okraski, Marshall Mounts, Haley Shaffer, Daimere Wilson-Turner, Haden Wamsley and Tori Webster presented teaching-related research during the seminar.
