Elections officials all over the state are doing exactly the right thing by testing and retesting to be sure Tuesday's primary goes smoothly, and all vote counts are secure and accurate.
Rather than let it throw doubt on the upcoming election, residents should have renewed confidence that officials are doing everything in their power to fulfill their responsibility to voters.
"There was an error that was found in the export section of the software that is used to upload the results to the Secretary of State's office," Wood County Clerk Joe Gonzales told the Wood County Commission last week. "This error was found after we completed our public test on April 29."
Other counties had the same problem, and a software patch from the system's vendor has been sent out. The West Virginia Secretary of State's office is asking everyone to install the patch and rerun the test.
There has already been a test of vote tabulators. Elections officials are doing exactly the right thing by looking for problems and fixing them BEFORE Tuesday. (Early voting is unaffected by this process).
"We are going to do our due diligence," Gonzales said.
In coordination with state officials, Gonzales and other county elections officials have been transparent and ahead of the game. They take this job seriously, no matter the political nonsense being tossed around about their work.
They are doing their best for us, and it appears as though they are letting nothing slip through the cracks.
Voters can't ask for much more than that.
