Applause to Ona resident Lilly Harper Ryan, who has been selected as Maid Silvia for the 86th Mountain State Forest Festival by Director General Peggy Phillips. Ryan visited Elkins on Sunday to attend a private reception in her honor, sponsored by Graceland Inn and Davis & Elkins College Dining Services. Ryan, 20, is the daughter of Retired Lieutenant Colonel Jerry "Chip" Floyd and Amy Floyd of Ona. She is the granddaughter of Frank and Laura Santmyer of Elkins, Jim and Diana Sturm of Huntington, Norwin and Donna Lilly of South Charleston, Joe and Janet Richards of Charleston, Sandra Dennison of Ona and the late Jerry Floyd of Ona. She has one brother, Jaxon Santmyer, and two sisters, Anna and Erin Floyd. The future Queen Silvia is a 2021 graduate of Cabell Midland High School. In the fall, Lilly will be a senior at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. This summer, she will be an intern for U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito. The 86th Mountain State Forest Festival will take place from Saturday, Sept. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 6.
Applause to the Barbour County 4-H team, which traveled to Oklahoma for the National Land Judging and Homesite Evaluation Contest and won national honors. The team, which included Griffin Hart, Hunter Townsend, Hailey Finley and Hannah Nutter, placed first in both the land judging and homesite evaluation competitions. The team was coached by Jody Carpenter, an alum of Barbour County 4-H with a first-place land judging title of his own. Hart earned first place for individual score in land judging and ninth place in homesite evaluation. Townsend placed first in homesite evaluation and second individual in land judging. Finley placed eighth individual in homesite evaluation.
Applause to the Elkins High School Alumni Association has donated a total of $3,000 to various programs at the school. Alumni Association President Clark Martin handed out two separate $1,000 checks to the EHS choir and EHS football program last week. The money donated to the choir will help with the purchase of a riser and attire for its members. The funds given to the football team, meanwhile, will go toward the purchase of new uniforms. On Monday, Martin presented a $1,000 check to the Elkins High School band. That money will go to help with the purchase of new band equipment, including covers, cases and heads for drums.
Applause to all our local 2024 high school graduates, who took their first steps toward adulthood during the last month. As The Inter-Mountain newsroom staff covered graduation ceremonies, we were happy to celebrate the students' accomplishments, and we look forward to seeing what their future holds.
