Applause to longtime Elkins radio host Roger Taylor and all the organizers and volunteers who have worked to put together today's celebration of his career, as he retires from the air. The event will take place at the Rotary Amphitheatre at the Elkins Town Square behind the Elkins Depot Welcome Center. Activities will run from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. today, and the event will feature nonprofit vendors, giveaways and live local entertainment.The event's giveaway prizes will consist of tickets to the Soaky Mountain Waterpark in Sevierville, Tennessee, and a $400 "Pat's Pick of Fireworks Package" from P&K Outdoors. To register, you must be at least 18 years or older to win the fireworks package, which will be given away during the event. Come on out today and have some fun and let Taylor know how much you've enjoyed listening to him all these years.
Applause to the fifth consecutive Tygart Valley United Way's Kids Hygiene Drive, which will run through Aug. 9. The drive aims to make sure all students have necessary hygiene and personal care items when they return i to school in August at all 50 schools in Randolph, Barbour, Tucker, Taylor and Marion counties. Donations can be made at the TVUW main office in Fairmont or the TVUW Regional Office in Elkins on 11th Street.
Applause to the return of Citizens Promoting Community Cakewalks in Elkins. The series of community fundraising cakewalks kicked off its fourth year with an event Friday evening that benefited the Randolph County CLIMB Organization, a youth mentoring program in Randolph County Schools. Citizens Promoting Community has been committed to raising money for various community organizations and has raised more than $10,000 since its inception. This year the group has a full summer schedule of events in store for the Elkins area. Applause to The Arts Center in Elkins for currently hosting two exhibitions, including one from the Tamarack Foundation for the Arts. A "Faith, Family and Friends" solo exhibition by Holly Hinkle is currently on display, as well as "The Art of Fellowship," an exhibition celebrating the Tamarack Foundation for the Arts Fellowship artists throughout the years, and TFA's commitment to combat isolation by connecting West Virginia's artists. TFA officials hope the group show will inspire others to join the TFA mission and to showcase the work and talent that the state's arts community relies on to thrive.
