Applause to the many volunteers who have brought us the 2024 Randolph County Fair this week at 4-H Camp Pioneer in Beverly. A full day of activities are scheduled today, with gates opening at 8 a.m. A Color Run will be at 8:30 p.m., and at 10 a.m. there will be a Homemade Craft Show, Heritage Demonstrations, and the opening of a Petting Zoo. A Celebrity Cow-Milking Contest will be at 1 p.m., and Livestock Sales will take place at 1:15 p.m. Cow Patty Bingo will get underway at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and the Greased Pig Contest is slated for 3:30 p.m. Live musical performances are planned throughout the afternoon, and the Truck and Tractor Pull Competition is set for 6 p.m. Today's activities will be capped off by a Fireworks Display at 9:30 p.m. The Carnival will run from noon to 5 p.m., and from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. .
Applause to the many emergency workers who took part in a a water rescue at Audra State Park last weekend. Belington Volunteer Fire Department volunteers, along with members of the Philippi Volunteer Department, the Junior Volunteer Fire Department and the Barbour County Ambulance Authority, were dispatched to the state park to rescue a man who had apparently dove off a rock and suffered a head injury. Also aiding the situaion were the Coalton Volunteer Fire Department, the Elkins Volunteer Fire Department and the Beverly Volunteer Fire Department. The BVFD also offered thanks to Barbour County 911, the West Virginia State Police, the Barbour County Sheriff's Department and the Audra Park Ranger for their assistance during the rescue.
Applause to the 15 local women who were inducted into the Our Town Inc. Rosie the Riveter Honor Roll at the Randolph County Community Arts Center last weekend. It was the fourth annual celebration to recognize women from the area who served their country during World War II. Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon that represents the women who worked in factories and shipyards during the war. Any woman who received pay for any essential work during war is considered a Rosie. Lorraine Poling Moran, who is 101 years old, was the only Rosie able to take part in last weekend's celebration. Family members attended the event on behalf of the rest of the inductees.
Applause to Davis Trust Company's $43,000 donation to Tygarts Valley High School that will go toward the purchase of new bleachers for the school's gymnasium. The current bleachers at the school were installed in 1994 and are just the second set to ever be placed there. The original bleachers were installed at the gymnasium in 1950.
