Applause to all the candidates who were brave, committed and inspired enough to put their names on the ballot and take part in Tuesday's General Election. Win or lose, we salute you for getting involved. One of our modern society's worst attributes is a lack of volunteers, whether for fire departments, charitable organizations or to fill necessary governmental positions such as the ones we just voted for. Getting involved in politics may not always be fun, but it is necessary for candidates to step forward for the good of our towns, our counties, our state and our country.
Applause to everyone who did their civic duty and got out and voted in the General Election. You made your voices heard, and no one can accuse you of idly sitting by and not getting involved in how our government is run.
Applause to the "Veterans Day Salute" series of events in Philippi today which will feature a 5K Race, a Field of Flags Ceremony, a Quilts of Valor Presentation and more. Battlers Knob is inviting the community to come together on the former campus of Alderson Broaddus University for a series of celebratory events as part of the "Veterans Day Salute Honoring All Who Served." Around 2 p.m. a Field of Flags Ceremony will feature more than 1,000 American flags being placed in a green space in the middle of the former campus. The ceremony will honor the roughly 1,011 veterans who live in Barbour County. West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner, a Barbour County native and veteran, is expected to give a speech during the event. At 3 p.m. Battlers Knob, in partnership with the West Virginia division of Quilts of Valor, will hold a Quilts of Valor Presentation at Burbick Hall. The presentation will pay tribute to 25 Barbour County combat veterans for their service and a "unique patriotic" quilt that was crafted "just for them."
Applause to the Veterans Day Dinner on tap today at the American Legion H.W. Daniels Post 29 in Elkins. Laura Clark, the state American Legion Department Auxiliary President, will serve as the guest speaker at the 2024 Veterans Day dinner. The social hour for the Veterans Day Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 9, with dinner at 6:30 p.m.
Applause to the timely public discussion on education planned for next week, part of a new program billed as "Elkins-Randolph Together: A Community Conversation." The conversation is entitled "Education: What is the road ahead?" at the Myles Center for the Arts on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will include an Educational Fair that will feature one-on-one discussions. The Fair will be open before and after the conversation, which will feature three guest panelists: Randolph County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Dilly; President Chris A. Wood of Davis & Elkins College; and Sarah Wamsley from the West Virginia Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Education.
