Applause to the arrival in Elkins of the long-awaited Rosie the Riveter statue. The 6-foot, 3-inch statue, which was designed by Big Statues of Provo, Utah, at a cost of $67,000. On Monday morning, the biggest hurdle in the project was cleared when the statue itself and its 850-pound black marble base were delivered to Elkins. The statue was shipped from Utah and will be stored at a facility owned by Jim Davis, where it will remain until it can be moved to its permanent location. The Emma Scott Garden Club is currently accepting donations for the statue project, and recently established a GoFundMe account. Applause to the Town of Davis' groundbreaking ceremony Monday to launch a pair of major infrastructure initiatives. The two projects will include a sanitary sewer collection replacement and a storm water separation system. The cost of the projects is $13.1 million, but the town has secured $11 million through a combination of grants and principal-forgiveness loans. Between 50 to 60% of Davis' sanitary sewer system, which is currently operating at full capacity, will be freed up after the completion of the project, officials said. The projects will separate the storm water from the sanitary sewer systems.
Applause to the National Day of Prayer being honored by Randolph County and the City of Elkins. A ceremony was held at the Rotary Amphitheater at the Elkins Railyard Depot at 11:30 a.m. May 1 with members of the community joining the mayor and local religious leaders in prayer. Mayor Jerry Marco signed a proclamation to declare May 1 as "a Day of Prayer" throughout the City of Elkins. Earlier that day, a similar ceremony was held by county officials around the Randolph County Courthouse flagpole.
Applause to the second annual "State of the Corridor" event, held recently at Magnolia Hall in Elkins. The event, which was moderated by Dr. John G. Poffenbarger, an associate professor of political science at Davis & Elkins College, featured regional leaders discussing the future of economic development in the region. County Commissioners David Kesling of Randolph, Sam Nolte of Upshur and Agnes Queen of Lewis, took part in the event, as did Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco, Buckhannon Mayor Robbie Skinner and Mayor Kim Harrison-Edwards from the city of Weston. Development Authority Directors Robbie Morris (Randolph), Ray Smith (Lewis) and Brandon Tenney (Upshur) also participated.
Applause to Randolph County's Teacher and Service Staff Employees of the Year, who were honored recently by the Randolph County Board of Education. Samantha Phipps, who is a World Language teacher at Elkins High School, was selected as the county's top teacher for this past school year. Brian Paugh, a custodian at Jennings Randolph Elementary School, was recognized as the best service employee in the county.
Applause to the Blessing Box, through which LiveAbility is bringing food, hygiene, pet food and more to their clients and the community in the Elkins area. Applause to the recognitions of National Nurses Week by both Randolph County and City of Elkins officials. Representatives from Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center were on hand for the reading of a proclamation by the Randolph County Commission last week, as well as a proclamation signing by Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco this week on Tuesday, the start of National Nurses Week. National Nurses Week runs from May 6-12. The date of May 12 is significant because it is Florence Nightingale's birthday. Nightingale was the famous English social reformer and is considered to be the founder of modern nursing. National Nurses Week is part of the overall National Nurses Month, which runs for all of May. It also incorporates International Nurses Day on May 12.
