Applause to the small army of volunteers and officials it took to present the annual Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs (HOFNOD) event held at the Phil Gainer Community Center in Elkins last weekend. Hundreds of people attended the family friendly celebration, which offered both fun and a variety of helpful information.
Applause to all the area's new college graduates. Both Davis & Elkins College and West Virginia Wesleyan College held commencement ceremonies last weekend, and we salute all the local residents who graduated from either those two institutions, or from other colleges and universities this month.
Applause to the Community Conversation on Arts as an Economic Driver, presented by Elkins-Randolph Together on Wednesday, featuring panelists from the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, the Augusta Heritage Center and The Old Brick Playhouse. The event, which was held at the Augusta Heritage Center at 21 Third St. in Elkins, saw more than 50 community members come together to discuss the topic.
Applause to Elkins native Kourtney Jones, who was crowned the 2025 West Virginia Strawberry Festival Queen last weekend, as the festival kicked into full gear. Jones' coronation took place inside Wesley Chapel on the West Virginia Wesleyan College campus Saturday evening. She was crowned by state Sen. Robbie Morris, R-Randolph County. Originally from Elkins, Jones moved to Buckhannon to attend nursing school at West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she is a member of the women's fraternity Alpha Xi Delta. Jones also works as an EMT for both Upshur and Randolph counties' Emergency Medical Services.
