Celebrating Legacy of E. Gordon Gee

Monday marked the conclusion of an extraordinary chapter in American higher education as E. Gordon Gee stepped down from his presidency at West Virginia University.

Spanning more than four decades and multiple institutions, Gee’s career has been characterized by visionary leadership, an unwavering commitment to student engagement, keen insight into the future of education and a profound impact on the nation’s academic landscape.

Gee’s journey began where it ends — WVU.

He first served as the university’s president from 1981-85. His leadership trajectory then took him to the University of Colorado, Ohio State University (twice), Brown University, and Vanderbilt University. In 2014, he returned to WVU, bringing with him a renewed dedication to the institution’s growth and academic excellence.

Under his guidance, WVU achieved significant milestones. The university attained R1 research status, a testament to its commitment to high-level research activity. Gee also spearheaded the establishment of the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute and the WVU Purpose Center, initiatives that have enhanced both the university’s research capabilities and student development programs.

Beyond institutional achievements, Gee was renowned for his personal engagement with students. During the course of his career, he oversaw the conferment of more than 335,000 diplomas. His approachable demeanor and genuine interest in student life made him a beloved figure on campus — particularly for a “selfie” with a student (or students). He stayed active on the campus community, always putting students first.

Gee’s influence extended beyond the university’s boundaries. He played a pivotal role in statewide initiatives aimed at economic development and reversing population decline. Programs such as West Virginia Forward, which he helped launch in collaboration with Marshall University and state leaders, exemplify his commitment to leveraging higher education as a catalyst for economic and societal progress.

As he transitions from his role as president, Gee plans to take a year off before returning to teach at the WVU College of Law, continuing his lifelong dedication to molding young minds.

E. Gordon Gee’s legacy is one of transformative leadership, deep-rooted commitment to student success, and an unwavering belief in the power of education to effect positive change. His contributions have left an indelible mark on WVU. As the university embarks on a new chapter, it does so standing on the strong foundation built during Gee’s remarkable tenure.

We’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating here: for 16 years — from 1981 until his departure in 1985, and then again upon his return to Morgantown in 2014 until Monday — Gordon Gee has been the most excellent ambassador for the university and the state. His return to Morgantown came at the right time –and his second term as president has greatly benefited the university. We join those across the Mountain State in thanking him for his service and wishing him well in this next chapter.
